South Carolina Association of the Deaf
Public Statement from SCAD:
June 8, 2020
The Board and Staff of South Carolina Association of the Deaf (SCAD) express their sadness and grief regarding the recent horrific death of George Floyd. We stand in solidarity with those who are protesting the underlying systemic racism and social injustice. We hope that progress can be made to address these long-standing problems.
The SC Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities continue to face oppression and discrimination but we need to recognize that the oppression we face cannot be compared to the oppression of the Black Deaf and Hard of Hearing community faced every day with systemic racism and police brutality.
SCAD has ZERO tolerance for oppression and discrimination of any kind including racism. We are committed to continue working with the Black Deaf and Hard of Hearing communities in South Carolina, the National Association of the Deaf, and other civil rights organizations to address this systemic oppression and inequalities.
The SCAD Board is open to dialogues and suggestions from the Deaf Community on how SCAD can make a difference and what we can do to bring about some meaningful changes in our state.
